Valu-mart (styled as valu-mart) is a chain of supermarkets based in Ontario, Canada. It is a unit of National Grocers, itself a unit of Loblaw Companies Limited, Canada's largest food distributor.

A former employee mentioned, "Valu-mart makes you work 4 hour shifts 7 days a week and call it part time. The deli manager is a raging bit, everyone knows it and nothing done. If you enjoy being screamed at over asking questions or not doing something even though no one asked then I would highly recommend this job."

Current Employee - Front End Cashier says

"Because the cashes are close to the doors, cashiers get very cold in the winter time. You are subject to sometimes deal with rude customers or even sometimes discriminatory remarks."

"• Neighborhood not the most ideal, especially at night time • Overall work hours were cut once"

"The worst place I've ever worked. They are Aggressive and abusive. They do not care about their employees and they promote the most abusive people who make work life the place you never want to be. Every morning you have to work you wake up sayin I'd rather be homeless.MoneyEverything about them"

Manager (Former Employee) says

"Loved working with my coworkers. The store owner however is a bully with no soft management skills. His answer to this problem is to just not deal with his employees at all . An extreme macromanager. Overall morale in the store is very low.AdvancementNo appreciation"

STOCKER (Current Employee) says

"Valu-Mart is a okay place to work .. I pretty much learn about rotating all food products its pretty easy work, Co-workers are awesome there but I also fine its a lot favouritism since it's a lot of the owners family that works there, just feel like I need to get out there and fine something else love working sine it was my first job, I do have a family also three children I am able to work during the weeks and wouldn't mind working every second weekend .No lunches prefer to get work done.long hours"

Cashier (Former Employee) says

"The full-time employees had little regard for the younger staff and would frequently "forget" to send people on breaks, or cut them too short while taking extended breaks of their own. Management and payroll was a mess and would underpay for shifts."

"lifting 50 pounds+ dealing with customers face to face. cleaning duties every night learned how to properly store n handle fresh meatgood atmospherenot many hours"

customer service (Former Employee) says

"You pay weekly for union, use it. Doesnt protect equality in your job, But may help future employees. Too many double standards, Plain and simple, protect yourself and stand up for your rights!"

Deli Worker (Former Employee) says

"A typical day at work in the deli consists of slicing meats for customers, cooking foods, stocking shelves, and cleaning. What I learned at valumart is basic customer service skills. Since this was really my first job it taught me how to interact with customers and deal with the difficult ones. The hardest part of the job would have to be the fast paced rushes, since there is alot to do in those moments it can get very stressful. The most enjoyable part of the job was interacting with my customers, and coworkers. I made some really good friends at Valumart, and recommend this job for anyone who is looking for a first job.Cooperative StaffMany Shifts, Long hours"

Clerk (Former Employee) says

"If you are looking for a temporary job or an entry level position it is a good place. It is a good environment for a student, who needs a flexible time to work. In most, the salary is lower. The management is weak. The rules and roles are not clear.Flexible hoursLow management, low salary, low safery."

Meat Packer/ cashier/ Produce/ deli (Former Employee) says

"biggest problem was their desire to keep employees separated and micromanaged. they also never give pay stubs and rarely ever give any time off. The best thing about the job was the co workers, everyone got along fairly well."

Cashier & Cash Office Supervisor (Former Employee) says

"If you're looking for a part time job while in school, this is not a bad place to work. You'll never work later than 10pm or earlier than 7am, and can easily pick up 10-15 hours during the week. The manager is flexible and understanding of school schedules and other jobs, although there were occasional issues and miscommunications regarding being asked to pick up extra shifts and covering shifts for others. In terms of the actual work, it's either dead slow or crazy busy, and can be quite tedious, but it's good customer service experience. When I worked there, the location had defaulted on their union meeting and therefore was not required to meet current company union standards (i.e. pay raises, employee discount cards, etc.), but I'm not sure if this has since changed."

Deli Clerk (Current Employee) says

"A typical day for me would be slicing various meats for customers, cooking and serving hot food, putting orders away on the load days, doing various cleaning jobs and making sure everything is kept in order. I have learned a great deal of patience, great customer service skills especially with a difficult customer and also a great deal of the various products provided. Management can be demanding at times and what I mean by that is, they ask a lot of you and they usually need it done right away and that is understandable but if you tell them that you just need to finish up a job before you can start what they asked of you, they will get upset. The hardest part of the job is doing having to do other people's work on top of your own when they go home early. The most enjoyable part of the job is getting to interact with the customers. Some of them I know by name and they always come in to say hello and some days that makes the day so much better.Friendly customers and co workersNot enough hours"

Cashier (Former Employee) says

"Would work 5-9 pm after finished school. Cashier and stocked shelves, cleaned shelves"

HMR/Deli Counter Server and Cashier (Former Employee) says

"My coworkers were great people but no one enjoyed working here. It was just a job. other than a few regulars, a lot of the customers were rude to me. I had a hard time adjusting to the deli equipment because I only got two short training shifts. Other employees wouldn’t clean and I found myself working very hard to keep the kitchen clean. The owner seemed like he was constantly stressed out."

Cash Office Clerk (Former Employee) says

"I worked here as a student and ended up going upo in the company within my probation to become and cash office clerk, which gave me a lot more responsibility at 18 then I had intended. but also was good to teach my how to handle that responsibilitylearned new skills and responsibilitiesnot enough room for salary advancement"

Cashier, and stock associate (Former Employee) says

"Answer all questions they have for you The interview was all about yourself so they can get to know you you as an individual and what experiences you have and what can you bring to the company as an employee."
